Travel Tips to Consider Before Traveling Abroad

Though this may seem like the most Captain Obvious statement we could make, foreign countries are, for lack of a better phrase, foreign. In our daily lives we get very used to things that are familiar to us, and that can cause quite a bit of culture shock for people that have never traveled to other countries (besides the tropical resorts that tend to offer luxuries we recognize).

With that in mind, here are a few things you should keep in mind before traveling to a foreign country so that you have better expectations before you arrive...

Understanding Foreign Countries Are… Well, Foreign

  • Not everyone is willing to learn English
Though many countries have English speaking guides, and some vendors will have a few phrases they can say in English, not everyone will be able to communicate with you. Just like many folks get upset that non English speakers don’t want to learn the language here in the United States, it is rude to expect anyone in a foreign country to speak anything other than their native language.

Your best bet to avoid offending people, and/or having trouble communicating, is to try and learn some choice phrases before visiting a non-English speaking country. Even if there is still miscommunication, you’re at least showing the residents of that country respect by trying to speak their language.

If you are nervous about the language however, one thing that is also becoming more common is to bring a smartphone along that is signed into Google Translate. This allows you to speak your language and have it read to the person you’re talking to in their native tongue. Then, they can reply and you’ll hear what they said to you in English.

  • Foods and drinks may taste different
There is not a Diet Coke in many countries in Europe, for example. They have Coke Light and Coke Zero, but not the United States version of Diet Coke. Pepsi and Coke has less sugar in Thailand, and many countries in Asia. Even bottled water, juices, and many other seemingly familiar beverages taste different in other parts of the world.

Many food items have significantly less salt or sugar than you may be used to as well. And, it might be considered rude to ask for condiments, let alone salt, in some restaurants. Remember you are a guest, and to expect certain things could cause friction. Be sure you research the local customs to know the expectations before you go.

  • Be prepared to observe religious and cultural customs that may not be normal to you
Some restaurants may not serve certain items because they are not permitted in their culture or religion. Businesses may close or open at hours you’re not used to, and religious observations could occur in ways you’re not accustomed to depending on where you are visiting.

There are also parts of the world that you may need to dress differently, and even act differently. For example, there are countries where holding hands in public, or even hugging someone is frowned upon. Then, there are countries where it’s considered extremely rude to refuse a cup of tea or an invitation to dinner.

Your best bet is to research the customs of the country you will be visiting ahead of time to prepare yourself. The last thing you want is to upset someone in another country simply because you didn’t know their rules, customs or observations. In fact, depending on the offense in the country you’re in, it could lead to a legal fine or incarceration. Yes, really!

  • Political unrest and demonstrations can occur anywhere at any time

Though we are used to the laws and how to legally fight for our rights here in the United States, things can happen in other countries at any time. For example, a mode of transportation can become unavailable due to workers going on strike. Or a political argument over any number of things can cause riots and demonstrations that could turn violent.

This is why it’s critical you have travel insurance, know where your local U.S. embassies are, and that you do your due diligence to track the current news in the area you will be visiting. Anything can happen in any city (United States or foreign), and you must use your best judgment to protect yourself no matter where you are.

With that said, most people have no problems at all in any of the countries they visit. However, education and awareness never hurt anyone. Doing research on any place you are considering visit ahead of time is always a good idea. These are just a few differences to keep in mind, there are many others to consider and prepare for to ensure you aren't disappointed or shocked when you arrive.

It’s also a good idea to work with a travel professional that specializes in the destination(s) you are traveling to, who can be there for you should anything go wrong while you are out of the country. I love your tip about respecting the customs and religious practices of the areas in which you are traveling. That makes sense considering you want to be a polite guest and respect all the laws in place. I'll have to be mindful of how I act when entering a new country for sightseeing.
